© Toshiyuki Yano / Nacasa & Partners Architects:  Suppose design office Location:  Hiroshima city, Hiroshima, Japan Project Team:  Makoto Tanijiri, Masafumi Shimatani Client:  Yusuke Yamamoto Total Floor Area:  83.99 sqm Project Year:  2009 Photographs:  Toshiyuki Yano When I design, I think about space without any stereotypes. To delete the all common sense in my mind is a key for me to bring up new or beyond ideas of spaces. The hair salon, Lodge, was designed through the process to remove the general ideas. The hair salon offers two spaces, one is close and the other is open, to meet demands both of customers and workers. The place is divided in three spaces with a mirror and shelves, and there are no walls just as dividers. floor plan section The mirror is floating and placed only at the customers’ eyelevel, and it also works as a long continuous partition for the middle of space. Because of the mirror and shelves, views of all customers who are sitting on a chair, are blocked, and they could feel the space more private. On the other hand, workers could have a view for the whole space over the top of the dividers. To control the height of the partitions made the hair salon possible to have the two types of spaces for both of customers and stuffs who have opposite demands to a salon space. Moreover, the mirror stainless plate also function to create a flow of the space, and the surface combined mirror and vibration finish could emphasize the movement more. © Toshiyuki Yano / Nacasa & Partners To delete all stereotypes of hair salon, and think about each interactive relationship at the space, was a chance to notice more possibilities of creating the salon. Makoto Tanijiri believes to design a base of ideas is more important than to design the actual space, and the process has more potential to create new space yet keeping the original function.

Marketing for architects

Last week I read this tweet by our friend @fedenegro from CASE : Why do architects always base their marketing strategies based on their peers instead of potential clients? I blame it on studio I couldn´t agree more with it. What do you think?

Watertower / Hugon Kowalski

Hugon Kowalski, from Poland-based H3AR , shared with us his watertower skyscraper for Sudan. More images and architect’s description after the break. It’s been 50 years since UN Declaration about the independence of African nations which was the end of the colonization and exploitation of the third world countries. Year 1960 was called Year of Africa. The conflict over water and land in Sudan has created political unrest for decades. However, in 2007, scientists from Boston University discovered an underground lake in the region of Darfur, Sudan. This lake is tenth biggest lake in the world (31, 000 m2) and would have great potential in resolving the conflict if managed correctly. Addressing this water issue, polish firm H3AR architect and design recently proposed a building that allows access to underground waters through the application of water pumps. The form of the building was inspired by a water tower and also by the symbol of the african savanna – the baobab. The building houses water pumps, a treatment plant but also a hospital, a school and a food storage center. This building is meant to provoke economical development but also stimulate cultural exchange and the coexistence of the three different religions and languages in Sudan. The building walls are constructed using compressed dry stacked clay bricks, made on site using a rough mixture of earth, cement and water. The bricks would be baked in the hot sun, thus, requiring no extra energy and limiting the environmental impact of the materials. The choice of using this technology represents the desire to introduce alternative and sustainable technologies within a context that is tied to stardardized though not always optimal building practice. Two water circulation processes would be in place. First set of extracted water is meant to heat or cool the building, and is accessible to the users. Second, set of extracted water is used for the building itself (i.e. kitchen, toilets).

Casa Son Vida / tec Architecture & Marcel Wanders Studio

© Gaelle Le Boulicault Architects: tec Architecture Interiors: Marcel Wanders Studio Location: Palma de Mallorca, Spain Project Area: 790 sqm Project Year: 2009 Photographs: Gaelle Le Boulicault & Marcel Wanders Studio While Mallorca has long been a top destination for tourists in search of sun, beach, and great parties, today the Spanish island is about to garner some attention of a different kind. Cosmopolitan Estates, Ltd. (Cosmopolitan), a new real estate development company that plans and develops ultra-luxurious, high-design, state-of-the-art, sustainable residences and resorts throughout Europe and Asia, is proud to announce the completion of Casa Son Vida 1, a world-class modern luxury villa located near Palma in the exclusive Son Vida community. The first of six planned villas on the island, Casa Son Vida 1 is a hint of what is to come from Cosmopolitan. Standing as an expression of a new standard of progressive design that skews more futuristic than nostalgic, Casa Son Vida will capture the attention of the international design world with its sophistication and vitality, making Mallorca a new destination for those in search of design exploration and inspiration. © Gaelle Le Boulicault “While Mallorca is undeniably gorgeous, we felt there was a gap in the market,” explains Cosmopoli- tan president Michael Rimbeck. “Most real estate on the island is predictable or inevitably Mediterra- nean. We wanted to offer the increasing number of young, progressive, and adventurous buyers who are attracted to the island a more daring and evocative alternative. That is our ultimate goal, to create spaces that inspire and evoke. Casa Son Vida 1 does precisely that, and our future projects will only take it to the next level.” plan 01 As with all Cosmopolitan projects, a world-class network of architects and designers was assembled to complete the project. Los Angeles- and Switzerland-based tec architecture (tec), a global boutique design firm known for their own distinctive brand of architecture of the ‘third millenia,’ was commis- sioned to transform the villa from a run-of-the-mill quasi-Mediterranean structure into something all together different. © Gaelle Le Boulicault “Casa Son Vida 1 aims to redefine the notion of the luxury villa by moving most of the paradigms of luxury towards a more contemporary and forward-looking expression of architecture and technology,” explains Sebastian Knorr, tec co-founder and design director. “The project pushes the envelope in every direction and every sense; it is highly sustainable, basically off-the-grid, gives an unheard of sense of space and place, explores new construction technologies, and enters into a critical dialogue with the decorated box buildings in its vicinity. Casa Son Vida 1 is unavoidably exuberant and un- abashedly outrageous.” © Gaelle Le Boulicault Located approximately 15 minutes outside of Palma de Mallorca in an exclusive community called Son Vida, the eponymously named Casa is an example of design poetry in motion. The 8,500 square foot luxury residence transgresses the constraints of site and context, redefining luxury architecture as it is typified by the traditional and prolific Mediterranean and Tuscan styles otherwise found on the island. This act of defiance is accomplished by creating an entirely new structure that erupts unexpectedly from the walls of the existing Mediterranean home. The new structure evolves into a bold, curva- ceous shape that completely evades conventional definition. The idea is that the two pieces co-exist as separate entities, meeting abruptly and then quite literally turning away from each other. Their interaction suggests a chance encounter and speaks to the deliberate and bold juxtaposition of the two elements. The new structure could even be likened to a futuristic spacecraft that has quite literally landed on a typical Mallorcan villa. © Marcel Wanders Studio © Marcel Wanders Studio Amsterdam-based Marcel Wanders Studio was tapped for the interior design, marking the first full residential project for the international design phenom. With his trademark wit and style, Wanders appoints the interiors with signature furnisthings and refined finishes. © Marcel Wanders Studio With a second villa just completed, two more about to break ground, and two more in development, Cosmopolitan is inspiring a design revolution on the island. Poised on the brink of a design renais- sance, Son Vida is on the way to establishing itself as an architecturally progressive community, put- ting Mallorca on the global design map for years to come.

Spec House in Maine Gets LEED – Teaches Zero Carbon Design

Richard Renner Architects designed this carbon neutral home as a spec home at the request of a local construction company, in Maine. Its residents are just much more eco conscious.  The state that would qualify as the Sweden of the USA with 55% of its electricity coming from renewable sources thanks to state legislation that requires it. The construction company; Wright-Ryan Construction had been  getting a lot of inquiries about sustainable building from  local people in Maine, and wanted to teach its staff hands-on about sustainable building by building the spec home as a learning experience – but the benefits spread to more people than anticipated. Wright-Ryan’s subcontractors and suppliers wound up also being challenged by a first-hand look at sustainable home building in action – and changed the way their own businesses ran things. The first different step was to leave the site as undisturbed as practicable. Wright-Ryan cleared only enough land for construction access and to ensure good solar exposure for the roof-mounted PV array and solar hot-water system. Native grasses and ferns were used to fill in the disturbed area around the house once finished. For permanent access, Wright-Ryan put in a simple gravel driveway – the least intrusive option. Triple-glazed windows keep the winters toasty warm, in conjunction with the solar hot water heating from the roof that feeds sun-warmed water  into the radiant flooring system under the floors. The house garnered LEED ratings for its use of eco conscious materials like these locally harvested Dakota Burl cabinet faces in the kitchen cabinets, infilled with ground-up agricultural waste. The lumber and trim materials were FSC certified. The ceramic-tile flooring contains recycled glass, low- VOC finishes and caulks, and a mechanical ventilation system. The passive solar effects of the shades over the south facing windows keep the summer sun out and the lower in the sky winter sun in to warm the interior. But to be zero carbon, the house also makes electricity on the roof, with a 2-kW, grid-tied solar PV system. A solar hot water heater, comprising three 30 tube evacuated-tube solar collectors on the other side makes hot water for the house and for the radiant flooring. The combination of the landfill-friendly metal roof with its solar arrays, and  the more traditional style underneath turns out to be quite charming. Nestlé Social Block / GH+A Guillermo Hevia

© Cristián Barahona Architects: GH+A / Guillermo Hevia Location: Graneros, Chile Collaborators: Tomás Villalón, Francisco Carrión, Guillermo Hevia García, Marcela Suazo Client: Nestlé Chile S.A. Contractor: Precon S.A. Bioclimatic Consultant: Biotech Lighting: Opendark Project Area: 2,800 sqm Project Year: 2009 Photographs: Cristián Barahona, Guillermo Hevia H. & Guillermo Hevia García The new building, part of Nestlés social block at the Granero factory (VI Región – Chile), uses a variety of bioclimatic strageties, within a company policy of rational use of energy resources and economics in the 21th century. These strategies favorize the usage of natural resources, pasive vetilation systems, air-condition and cleaning for inside spaces, natural controlled illumination, effective cost savings in the use of hydrological resources (water consumption of restrooms, etc), tendencies to find the best sustainability, quality of life, rational use of resources and protection of the environment. ground floor plan The program contemplates a three storey building, with different programs: First floor for employees facilities (restrooms, dressingroom and cafeteria); the administration in the second floor; the third floor includes laboraties and a educational room. Bioclimatic systems: pasive ventilations and the use of hydrological resources The building is crowned by a suspended roof, façades with a double-skin, the additional multiuse water pond serves as fire-water standby and cooling system through evaporation for the sun exposed façades in the hot period. © Cristián Barahona The double-skin, made out of corten steel, which wraps around the building, create an avant-garde image. Constructed as a continuous surface, it protects against the solar radiation and due to its separation to the building, it creats a vertical Venturi ventilation, supplying temperated air on account of the evaporation of the surrounding pond. This metalic double skin consists out of different perforation treatments, plain sheets and black glass. north façade detailed section The corten steel is a meterial which oxidates in a short term period, in order to create its own protection, neutralizing its deterioration. It doesn´t requiere maintenance. Engender the image of a living organizm, which changes its tonality (orange ocher, brown) in time and furthermore by the different angle of the sunbeams and changing daylight. It contrasts with the in sight concrete walls and the black metal of the roof. The rythm of the designed standart-sheets breaks the monotony of the plane suspended surface and has been systematically illuminated to strengthen the night image of the building. Rational use of water consumption We put a special attention to the water consumption of the restrooms and in general. Using high tecnology devices and designs, with automatic anti-vandal taps, guaranteeing a controlled water consumption, sending a strong signal of protecting both, natural resources and economics. © Guillermo Hevia H. The design, the materials and the image of the building are an additional value, being a reference to the social responsability politics of Nestlé Chile to the employees, the comunity and the country. Stub The Butt On An AshPlate

Question to all smokers out there…how do you normally put out your cigarette? Most people I know just stub it under their foot, and obviously mess up the floor. Keeping this natural motion in mind is the AshPlate, a manhole-esque cover for public smoking zones. The hollow beneath the cover collects all the stubs, while giving the smoker the satisfaction of stamping his light. The floor plate form was finalized after a study of smokers’ postures (sitting, standing and squatting) was taken into consideration. The pole with the hole looks practical too. Designer: Kang Kyeyoung

Balanced Diet For Two

So you lovebirds think you can lead a balanced life, eat balanced meals and stay on the same wavelength on every issue? I got a test for you two; try eating from this SeeSaw Dining Plate! It’s got only one rule….the plate must stay balanced at all times; similar pace with similar actions will help you through! If you’re out of sync, you’ll break the equilibrium and obviously fail my test. Hands Up all those who would like to give it a try! Designer: Daniel Ballou

Keep Moving With A Little Help

Time is a good healer but without grit, determination and efforts, the range of motion to the affected limbs of a Stroke patient can take longer to recover than expected. Move On is a temporary training device that helps patients recover faster and get over their motion awkwardness. Apparently the muscle signals of those affected by a stroke are too low for complete contraction, but when Move On is strapped to the patient, it senses adynamic muscle signals and translates them into a desired movement. Due to an inverse stimulus, people get their normal motor skills. The Orthosis gives the patient the minimum amount of support necessary to gain back muscle power, towards a total recovery. Move On helps people move and get integrated into a normal life again. Desoigner: Matthias Menzel

No Numbers Or Hands, But It Tells Time

Watch concepts without traditional numerics and even analog hands? Minimalism to its extreme – or at least that’s what designer Robert Dabi is pitching. His ZERO watch has two discs  (one each for hours and minutes) that spin to tell time. My main problem with many numeric-less concepts is a delay in reading them. The ZERO looks like it may avoid that because I have no problems reading it. No word if it’ll hit the market but the flexible metal/rubber band will come in an array of colors if it does. Hit the jump for a video. Designer: Robert Dabi ZERO wrist watch from Robert Dabi on Vimeo .
